Re: G5RV inverted V

Any probs Lee give us a shout. You are unlikely, although i dont know, to be able to set it up as high as it should be set. But there are ways arouns this. Good luck with it. emoticon

Cheers Dave,
I may well need a bit of advice....
it says that the centre is to be mounted above 36 feet, think i will struggle with as i live in a bungalow!!!
will give it a go and see how high i can get it... if all else fails i still have the A99...could hang it off that.

posticon Re: G5RV inverted V

Well, the "inverted V" is up!! and typically 555 is zzz so cant see if its any better...
Using a zetagi matcher at the moment, hopefully the auto ATU will arrive tomorrow.

its not as high as the recommended 36 ft, its about 30, but i did manage the right angle (well nearly didnt get the pretractor out)
so just waiting for a bit of prop now...

Re: G5RV inverted V

Hi, If you have been using an antron 99 for 11 metres the G5RV wont be a patch on it. The vertical antron will have much better gain and be better suited to dx.
However if you are using the G5RV for 45 and 86 it will be much better because of its physical length.
When you say high swr ???? on what band?

Ahhhh right,
that will be it, at the moment i only have a 10/11m radio. i am on the look out for a HF rig (but cant decide which one) I will wait and see how it performs on the higher bands when i get the HF rig.
Many thanks, Lee....

does an a99 have any gain? i thought 1/2 wave dipoles exhibited no gain, except dbi, which doesnt exist??

Yes an Antron does have gain. How much Iam not sure but if you look on the internet it will tell you somewhere.
DB is decibel gain
DBI is decibel gain over an Isotropic dipole. I@E a mathematical dipole
So your right it doesn't truly exist but its how gain is worked out on paper.
Most gain on aerials are refered to by dbi

Re: G5RV inverted V

...because it makes them look better.

If a manufacturer gives a specification relative to a dipole, it may not look as good, but it is more meaningful.

A well-designed 5/8 wave vertical would give a gain of about 2 - 3 dB over a dipole, but this is only because the radiation of a 5/8 is concentrated a little closer to the horizon, not because it has magically found some more power from somewhere.

SKS you are absolutly right, the A99 is a lot better on 11m but the G5 comes into its own 20m and above.... which at the moment is where all the DX is....it works a treat now..
thanks for the advice gents...
